Environmental Print and It's Affects On Early Literacy Development
Environmental print has a great affect on chidren's literacy development. Typically, children tend to mimic the adults that they interact with the most. The types and ammounts of printed materials that parents have in the home and how they interact with the materials affect's the children's interest in literacy. Young chldren come in contact with print such as magazines, newspapers, and books. If they see their parent continually reading these they will become familiar with print and be able to grasp concepts of print sooner. Environmental print also includes corporation logos such as McDonalds©, Burger King©, and Target©. Many say that environmental print marks the start of beginnng to read.
Learning to read can be difficult, but children love to share what they know. When words that children know are displayed in the classroom, they gain a sense of knowledge and pride that they can show their classmates that they know how to read a certain word. It makes them eager to learn more and succeed further if they believe they have a basic understanding of print. This is very helpful for those students who do not have many books or other forms of print in their home to help develop their reading ability because they are still proving that they have letter knowledge. The goal of having children recognize environmental print is to have children see themselves as successful readers.
